Te Kara - the internationally recognised flag of the United Tribes of Nu Tireni - represents the Sovereignty of all who have joined the confederation through He Wakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga O Nu Tireni 1835

The story of Te Kara.nz

Welcome to our journey of reclaiming and sharing the profound significance of the flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand, first raised in 1834 as a symbol of Māori sovereignty under He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni—the Declaration of Independence of 1835. This was more than a flag; it marked the birth of a trust with King William IV and the British Crown, affirming the mana of Māori to govern themselves under Tikanga, while fostering peace, justice, and trade.

Our website and apparel line exist to spread this powerful, often overlooked story—not for profit, but to inspire pride and ignite conversations. By wearing this flag or flying it with pride, you’re not just making a statement—you’re connecting to a legacy of self-determination and inviting others to learn, relate, and build relationships around this kaupapa. We created this space because too many remain unaware that this flag stands as one of the only lawful emblems of New Zealand, a testament to our right to rule within ourselves.

This isn’t about commerce; it’s about community. Every piece of merchandise is a bridge to bring people together, echoing the vision of He Wakaputanga for a future of care, protection, and good order for all—a vision we share with Tikanga Trade (tikangatrade.org) and the Wakaminenga Māori Government (govt.maori.nz). Guided by the spirit of nga pou e whitu, the seven principled foundations of the Wakaminenga, we’re committed to uplifting this message with integrity and heart. When you wear our clothing or display this flag, you’re joining a movement to honor our past and shape a future where sovereignty and Tikanga thrive. It’s a chance to connect, to educate, and to stand tall with mana—because this flag represents not just history, but a living promise of unity and strength for all who call this land home. Te Kara. Forever Sovereign.
